Dharmendra was born on 8 December 1935 in Ludhiana district in Punjab.He is the He-Man and action king of Indian cinema.His full name is Dharm Singh Deol and his father's name is Kewal Kishan Deol and his mother name is Satwant kaur.His father was a school teacher.He studied at Government senior secondary school in Ludhiana.He always wanted to be a filmy star so he sent an application to filmfare Talent hunt competition along with his photo and he got selected for the competition. After winning new Talent competition he shifted from punjab to Mumbai. And here he was signed for 'Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere'.Dharmendra filmy career started in 1960.
He was cast as a romantic hero for several years.In 'Phool aur Pathar' movie which came in 1966 he established himself as a action hero.He did many different roles in his filmy career.'Phool aur Pathar' became the highest grossing movie of the year 1966 and Dharmendra received his first filmfare nomination for best actor. One of his most notable role was in sholay in 1975 where he shared screen with Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini.Dharmendra worked with many female actor like with Nutan in 'Soorat and Seerat' ,with nanda in 'Akashdeep', with Saira Banu in 'Ayee milan ki Bela' and with meena kumari in 'main bhi ladki hoon' movie. He had a solo hero role in 'phool aur pathar'.It is his first action film.
His most successful pairing was with Hema Malini.The couple played together in many films including 'Raja rani','Seeta or Geeta','jugnu','dost','maa' and many more.His most notable acting performance was in 'Satyakam' and 'Sholay' .Dharmendra was highlu appreciated by audience.He worked in many action film that's why people called him action hero and He-Man of Indian cinema. Dharmendra's first marriage was to Prakash gaur at the age of 19 in 1954.From his first marriage he has two sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol and two daughters Vijeeta and Ajeeta. But after moving to mumbai and getting into film business he married to Hema Malini . The couple have two daughters Esha and Ahana.
In 1983 Dharmendra set up a production company Vijayta films. Its first film was 'Betaab' release in 1983 starring his son Sunny Deol as the lead actor in his debut movie.This movie was a blockbuster. In 1990 he produced the film Ghayal . This movie won seven filmfare awards including best movie award.It won national film award.In 1995 he launched his younger son Bobby Deol in Barsaat.He has been a member of 14th Lok Sabha of India representing Bikaner in Rajasthan from Bhartiya Janta Party.he has received many awards for his films.In 2012 Indian government honoured him with the India's thirst highest civillian honour Padma Bhushan.
